Your Questions About Dating And Matchmaking Answered
What is a wingman? Should I set up my friends? We answer your questions...
The world of dating can be confusing. 21st century dating has propelled into new directions, where sliding into the DM’s is the new way of courtship, you’re considered date-worthy if you’re a swipe right and you’re lucky if you get a rejection face to face.
That’s why having a little help from friends in navigating the dating journey can really help. In an ever-changing world of communication, dating and finding love can be a tricky adventure so we’re breaking down the most common questions we’ve been asked to make dating that little bit easier. Whether you’re helping a friend or yourself find a date, check out the tips below.
What does a wingman do?
A wingman is anyone who helps you on your dating journey. Think of them as a relationship cupid. The driving force that helps bring a couple together. Whether that’s setting you up on a blind date or with a mutual friend, helping you pick out the best profile photo if you’re dating online or even hyping you up to a potential date about how great you are. The important quality a wingman should have is to listen. At the end of the day, it’s your single friend who will be going on the date, not you.
How do I be an online wingman?
Easier than you think. Download Wingman App and invite a single friend. Once they’re on, you’ll be able to find matches for them and ask questions on their behalf. The great thing is you don’t need to be sneaky with it. With other fellow wingmen searching for potential matches for their single friend too, you can ask each other questions and set the two singles up. Think of it as a party, where you meet new people and let your friends introduce you.
What’s the best way to matchmake friends?
There’s three things to consider first.
Permission - No one likes an ambush. Check with your friend first if they’re up for being set up otherwise it will result in disaster. As a friend, you need to judge carefully whether your friend needs a push if they’re lacking dating motivation or if they’re really not ready to date (they might be happy living the single life.)
Compatibility - Make sure whoever you’re setting your friend up with, they’re actually suited to each other. Just because they’re both single, doesn’t mean they need to be set up together. Think of both of their qualities and whether they would get on emotionally as well.
Observe - Don’t push them to be together if they’ve already decided it’s a no-go. Or if their personalities clash, while opposites might attract in some cases, in most cases, it’ll end in disaster.
Matchmaking friends can be difficult but ultimately it’s worth a go if you really think they may be compatible.
Where’s the best place to find a wingman?
A good wingman is someone who knows you well and has your best interests at heart. Your closest friends are your best advocates. Your family could have insight that you would have overlooked before. Your co-workers (if you’re close with them) might get you to break out of the box a bit. Choosing who’s playing cupid for you is as important as choosing who you date.
My friend dates the wrong people! How do I convince them to date someone better?
Sometimes being a friend can be tough. What you believe is right, isn’t necessarily right for others. However, if you genuinely see your friend being mistreated time and time again, all you can do is step in, give them your perspective and find out what makes them stay in these relationships. There could be a deeper issue, an insecurity that they’re not ready to let go of that’s making them stick to what’s comfortable for them. If you genuinely are concerned for them, speak to them in a calm, non -interrogative way and listen. Ultimately they will do what they want to do and as a friend you’ll have to respect their decision.
I set my friends up but it didn’t go well. What should I do?
All matches can’t be 100% successful and as a matchmaker, you’ll have to deal with that. As much as we believe we are making an amazing match, it’s up to the two individuals on whether it becomes successful or not. You can’t force a connection. Don’t let it dishearten your efforts in setting up other friends. If they would still like you to introduce them to new people, go ahead but make sure you listen to why it didn’t go right the first time.
