Frequently, I hear new terms and concepts when it comes to the single world and dating. A recent concept is called ‘avalanching’ - and it has nothing to do with skiing.

This can have a couple different meanings. However, in most cases it means that as we approach meaningful and significant holidays, for example, Christmas and Valentines, many singles suddenly say ‘yes’ to everyone who swipes/taps/etc., on their profile. And that includes everyone who might even be a bit substandard!

This can lead to an avalanche of messaging and dates. And that’s okay if you’ve got the time and energy to work your way through this avalanche of offers.

In reverse, it can also mean that you start swiping on everyone who even remotely seems to be okay.

There are two main problems to avalanching

The first is emotional burnout. Many singles juggle busy lives, particularly in the run-up to Christmas, and getting involved in endless chats with high numbers of potential dates, is exhausting.

Singles feel they must be on “top form” with every encounter. And with avalanching they’re pulled in so many different directions by messaging with lots of other singles. It’s easy to get dating-drain, where you are simply drained by all your efforts.

The second potential issue is finding yourself with someone, down the line, who really isn’t up to scratch. When you’re in the middle of the avalanche, he or she seemed pretty darn good. Once, everything clears, and you’ve been seeing them for a number of meet-ups, post-avalanche, suddenly you realise you jumped in too soon.

Don’t panic. You don’t have to stay with someone who looked okay with your snow-goggles on!

Hopefully, reading this, will keep you aware of not throwing yourself into a dating-avalanche in the run-up to Christmas.

Good luck and happy dating, Pam x
