Our relationship expert Dr Pam Spurr (On Twitter & Instagram @drpamspurr) shares her crucial tips when it comes to kissing.

As adults, you think we would know how to finesse a first kiss. However, many surveys about dating turnoffs include “a bad kiss” as a common reason why someone doesn’t want further dates.

Never underestimate the power in your pout, especially as great kissing has the ability to generate lots of sexual chemistry. This goes for both singles who have met someone new and also for couples to keep the spark ignited.

The big question is about getting started, in this day of consent, post the me-too movement. Obviously, don’t rush things. I’m not going to labour this point as you are adults reading this and hopefully have the common sense to know how to handle this with someone new.

Also, I’m sure you don’t need the basics spelled out to you like having clean and fresh breath before you go in for a kiss. If you both just had some, for example, delicious garlicky Italian food then this isn’t a big issue.

A few crucial kissing points:

The following kisses are ‘foreplay-flexible’ and can be applied to kissing any erogenous zone not just their lips. Experiment with these kissing techniques - you might even invent your own technique.

Also depending on the mood, you might want to produce super-gentle or much more passionate kissing sensations - go with the flow.

If they respond well to your kisses keep it going - there's no time limit! A long kiss is erotic.

The Sliding Kiss – Rather than plunging your tongue into their mouth you slide it gently back and forth, in and out of their mouth. This warms up your confidence with a gentle start.

The Tease - Relax your lips and gently swish them back and forth against each other's lips. It sets your nerve endings on tingle-mode. Your lips may even swell a tiny bit as they get teased like this.

The Medieval Necklet – This begins at your partner's ear-lobe and circles down around their neckline - then moves back up to their other ear lobe. Plant little kisses all the way along their neckline. Takes you back to the days where a Knight of the realm would circle the low-cut neckline of a medieval woman’s gown with gentle kisses.

The Eastern Swirl and Poke – Alternate gentle swirling and poking actions with your tongue. Experiment with this during a French kiss or along their erogenous zones. As with other kisses your lips should be relaxed as you alternate these two sensations.

The Mediterranean Flick – A fantastic technique when foreplay is heating up - in the heat of passion you can gently flick (with the tip of your tongue) across your lover’s lips, cheeks, neck, and more.

Good luck and happy dating! x
