A Q&A with Wingman App Founder, Tina Wilson

Tell us about Wingman...

Wingman is an app that passes control of your online dating life to your friends and family. They are going to be your wingmen and wingwomen navigating your online dating life. They will write your profile and then introduce you to whoever they think is a good match for you. 

How did you come up with the idea for Wingman?

I found myself suddenly very single after a 10-year relationship and I was thrown into the world of online dating. It was bonkers. It was so frustrating in so many ways, I wanted a more authentic and impactful way to connect. That’s when the idea for Wingman was born.

Did you come from a tech background?

My background was not in tech, I was working in interior design and project management. When I went through the online dating experience, I felt compelled to do something to help myself and others. When I began, I managed it as any other project – research and finding the right team to bring Wingman to life. It took a lot of time and effort, it didn’t happen overnight.

I was surprised to see that all of the dating sites had been created by men. It was an added incentive to push ahead and dilute the masculine world with some new energy.  

Why is Wingman different to other dating apps?

Even those with the thickest of skins can become overwhelmed with online dating. Wingman breaks this cycle and gives you a friend in the process. It’s tricky to write an engaging bio about yourself. Your friends on the other hand can shout about how great you are. With a friend choosing who you should date, it provides new possibilities and finds something that you may overlook.

Any online or in real life dating advice you could give us?

At any age, you need to choose a platform that is going to suit your needs. There is something from a very casual relationship to extremely serious so make sure you choose the appropriate one. Be patient – just because its quick to sign up to some of these apps, it doesn’t mean your perfect match is waiting so be patient.

If you prefer dating offline, remember to look up. When you walk into a bar or a restaurant, people are more likely to be looking down at their phone rather than up. Being single and putting yourself out there with a clear mind isn’t easy, having friends and family join your journey makes dating less lonely.
