Our relationship expert Dr Pam Spurr (On Twitter & Instagram @drpamspurr) explains the signs to look out for that show your relationship is strong.

It can be confusing when you want a serious relationship but things haven’t gone so well in the past. Dating has felt like an uphill struggle and you simply want to get to the top and have an easy ride down with the love of your life by your side!

Some singles have an uncanny knack for knowing when things are right - and that’s wonderful for them. If you’re not one of those lucky singles – who absolutely trust your judgement – fear not, you can look for certain things in that new person to help you decide.

Here are six signs that they’re right for you:

*Do they give you a personal boost? Do you feel more confident in their company? That’s a great sign they bring out the best in you. Hopefully you do the same for them!

*Do you appreciate the way they handle money? When you’re out on a date they don’t seem suspiciously tight-fisted or the alternative – flashing the cash everywhere when they probably can’t afford it? What I call “money-attitude” similarities spell a bright future.

*Do you two share enjoyment of getting together with your families? Or maybe both of you are very independent of your families? Either way, sharing a love of seeing your families - or a love of independence from them – is a crucial sign.

*Is there synchrony in how much you two want to get together and also how much you two like doing things apart? Again, this flags up an important aspect to your relationship. Too many couples argue over one wanting to spend more time with the other.

*Do you have a feeling that you’ve known each other for far longer than you already have? That sense of “knowing each other” is an important indicator of compatibility.

*Do you see their faults in perspective - where you recognise that you have faults and everyone else does too? Or are you already annoyed by little things they do? If you can’t put them into perspective, that is not a good sign for a long-term relationship.

Think about these signs with the new person you’re dating. If there are any that don’t apply to you two - let’s say the way they spend money - is there compromise our way around it with a good old chat?

Because the strongest relationships are always the ones that started with being able to talk about any issue between you.
